Rocky Mount State Historic Site

Rocky Mount State Historic Site

When it comes to Tennessee’s history, few places can compare to the Rocky Mount State Historic Site. It is a significant landmark in the Piney Flats area, as it was once the state’s first territorial capital from 1790 until 1792.

The Rocky Mount serves as a living museum, with reenactments and exhibits depicting frontier life. This place allows you to travel back in time and learn about early America.

Rocky Mount, located just off Route 61, is a must-see for any history buff.

Cobb-Massengill House in Piney Flats

The famed Cobb-Massengill House, or the “Cobb mansion”, which served as the capital in the late 1700s, is located on this site.

Visitors to Piney Flats where the Cobb Mansion is found can get a taste of pioneer life in the early 1700s. During the said period, William Cobb relocated to the area from Virginia and built his historic mansion between the Watauga and Holston Rivers. The house contains a plethora of historical artifacts.

Cummins Falls

The Rocky Mount area is also home to stunning waterfalls in addition to the state park. Coon Creek Falls, with its 250-foot drop, and Rockhouse Falls are only two of the area’s minor waterfalls. Cummins Falls, with its 75-foot drop, is Tennessee’s ninth-highest and greatest waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains. Cummins Falls is a must-see for everyone who enjoys swimming.

Hands On! Discovery Center

You can also pay a visit to the Hands On! Discovery Center while you’re in the area. By visiting the site’s current Pliocene-era dig site, you may discover more about the area’s history. For instance, a bear, a saber tooth cat, and a mastodon have all been discovered by paleontologists. You can also visit Bays Mountain Park, which has a planetarium as well as animal habitats. McKinney’s Restaurant & Tavern is located in downtown Rogersville.
